I think it's slightly arrogant to dismiss mp3s and ITunes, and the people that use them.

I for one am an audiophile, though I can't afford the desired equipment. However as a programmer who wanted a portable storage device I plumped for an iPod Mini. And for what it is it sounds very good indeed, with tracks ripped in Apple's AAC format, even though I mostly use the thing for work.

The real culprits are as always the record companies. And also, I think many are gonna shoot me for this, the hifi manufacturers, and this INCLUDES THE HIGH-END ONES.

I still find sibilance, lack of image depth and transparency on many so called hi-fi systems. And to think they expect people to fork out 1000s for mediocrity is just astounding to say the least.

Which brings me back to you audiophiles. Some of you have too much time and/or money on your idle hands. I'd love to hear what my Bob Dylan SACDs sound like on on SACD or indeed Floyd's DSOTM, but I have no need to upgrade my stereo system which includes a DVD Player. I'm happy with the sound on DVDs and Redbook, so why should I bother? Why? I only wish for a bit more bass, but I'm ecstatic with the imaging and soundstage I'm getting. And I don't have a trace of harshness or sibilance, just a tad brightness which my ears have gotten comfortable with. So again why should I disrupt my system's performance?

FYI I'm using a Yamaha integrated and Pioneer DVD.
