are really a big waste of time.My take on this whole format war nonsense is that one should "stock up" on as much hi-rez music as one can - regardless of format.
Itunes and MP3s and the cow-level intelligence (and tastes) of the masses are the biggest threat to ALL hi-resolution formats. The industry is being driven by people who toss $300 dollar cell phones in the garbage to buy a $400 phone that can take a fuzzy photograph of their drunk retarded friends in a nightclub. Don't forget those annoying cheesy hip-hop ring-tones to piss off the other hi-tech Generation-Y script-kiddies on the schoolbus! It's brain-dead kids who want a cell phone that can send e-mails, text messages, download ringtones (and mp3's next) play video games, and basically serve as a mobile entertainment system so they can get through a schoolday without the threat of formulating a complete thought.
We're wasting the greatest technological minds of our time on bling-bling eye-candy gadgetry. And it's selling like hotcakes because nobody knows (or cares) about the difference quality makes.
I'm putting my money on extra-heavy audiophile VINYL pressings. This may be the only audiophile grade software available after the digital armageddon is over. We may be begging for Redbook yet the way things are going.
Myself, I'll smash my rig with a sledgehammer before I listen to compressed music.
Funny thing. The music industry is worried about copy protection of hi-res discs when all the world wants to do is file share crap MP3's and copy files onto their MP3 players. In the meantime we are all stuck with analog outputs - especially wonderful for those of us who have invested in a digital front-end.
What difference does it make if file sharing school kids are ripping Redbook or Hi-Res? The music gets shredded either way.
Just my $.02
