actually, the more i think about it i think it's incompetence. one thing i've realised is that the people who author DVDs often don't really care about audio - i've heard some horror stories including PCM "accidentally" being encoded into MPEG2 and then decoded back into PCM as part of the authoring process. i actually have one music DVD where the left channel is peak limited to -3dB but the right channel is limited to -1dB and you can actually hear the difference in volume levels!!! what were they thinking???
