what exactly do you mean by "straight conversion of a CD to a DAD 24/96"do you mean ripping the 44.1/16 tracks from a CD, applying an upsampling algorithm to 96/24 and then write out a DAD?
i haven't really done that - i'm not a big fan of upsampling - imho it only creates a benefit if you don't have a good digital filter implementation on your player and you want to avoid a brick wall. potentially, upsampling can create 0dBFS+ issues - my player handles 0dBFS+ just fine and i wouldn't want an upsampling algorithm to muck around and artificially clip 0dBFS+ signals. if you are noticing a difference on a 3910 - it's probably because you are bypassing denon's proprietary AL24+ processing (which some people don't like) which is known to have 0dBFS+ issues.
to give a perspective on how much difference a good player can make, my xa777es sounds better playing cds than a denon 3910 (which i'm currently reviewing) playing dvd-audios. and a linn unidisk sounds better playing mp3s (believe it or not) than my DVD-RP82 playing dvd-audios. so resolution isn't everything.
