Looks like a treasure trove for someone, via CBS News:

Better yet open the doors and let collectors take whatever they want.
500,000 records! What a PITA - let someone have them if they haul them away. Make sure the garbage is gone before they can have the gold.
What a headache - there's not much time left. Get the gal and move her to Hawaii.
I have a little different view of Record Collector and Sandy than many others do. Yes, he can very often be an ass when you first know him. No doubt about it, and I don't like that side of him. But I started shopping there (2-3 times a year) back in the 80s. I can tell you that once he understands that you love music (classical and jazz), that you know what you want, and importantly, that you aren't going to take any of his BS (I've walked out several times over the years), then he becomes friendly and helpful. His knowledge is vast. Yep, his prices are higher than average, but what you're getting for that is incredible inventory in those two genres. I shop there when there is something that I REALLY want and can't find in person anywhere else. He will negotiate prices within reason. No browsing? True unless you have at least a general idea of what you want. You want to browse EMI analogue releases, you say? Sure come an browse the 10' row of those. He an acquired tasted for sure. Whenever he ends up selling and retiring, I'll miss him. He owns the building as well which is worth a bundle in Hollywood, so the sale may take years.
Or not.
Owner sounds like the type of guy that will tell you your records have little value until they are his and then they are gold. I had a lifelong friend that was like that as an adult. I had a couple thousand 7" 45's that I had culled what I wanted and he asked if he could look through them, but said several times they weren't worth very much. I told him sure and since he was a friend I told him 5 cents each. He bought a bunch of them. About 2-3 years later he said he was gonna sell a bunch of his 45's and insisted I come over for a look. It was a bunch of what I had sold him for a nickel each. I looked and pulled one and asked how much? He said $8. I put it back and pulled out another and asked the price, $12. I started laughing and said I was done and left. When they were mine they had little value, and once they were his they instantly became priceless. I then explained why I was done. Even as a kid he was a nut.
you are being too kind in your description of him!
That same day I picked up a Technics SP25 table from him for $30, so it was worth the trip. Plus he is RIP, so I didn't see a need to dig him up. :)

This is LA's lowest rated record store. You can't just walk in and browse. You have to have a list of records you're looking for.

Dude sums you up and quotes a price based on what he thinks you'll pay for
the LP you show interest in.
Never would support such a seller and he's likely still sitting on LPs
passed on 35 years ago, holding out for an unrealistic price.
No wonder he has 500,000 LPs for sale.

and he happened to mention The Record Collector (which he used to live near)
and how the owner is an ASSHOLE!
Completely random 5 minute convo about record shops!
Well, I couldn't disagree and the last time I was in there the
co-worker I was talking to hadn't even been born yet.

I went to that store a few years back. The records were grossly filed without plastic covers. I asked the sales person for prices. He said to pick out what I wanted and the owner would then tell me how much. After about an hour, I had a stack of about 20 records. The owner they quoted me an astronomically high price. I tried to reason with him since I spent some time sorting through records. He got angry with me and said that he has no problem getting these prices and that he had many satisfied customers. As I was leaving, he followed me out the door and started name calling me. It was the worst experience buying records ever.
trying to buy just ONE record from that miserable SOB is work enough.

Love that penny taped to the top of the headshell :-)
Hi there,The penny would be OK, provided the tonearm was rebalanced after adding it.
In this case, it would just increase the effective mass of the tonearm.Higher tonearm effective mass has many followers !
