Owner sounds like the type of guy that will tell you your records have little value until they are his and then they are gold. I had a lifelong friend that was like that as an adult. I had a couple thousand 7" 45's that I had culled what I wanted and he asked if he could look through them, but said several times they weren't worth very much. I told him sure and since he was a friend I told him 5 cents each. He bought a bunch of them. About 2-3 years later he said he was gonna sell a bunch of his 45's and insisted I come over for a look. It was a bunch of what I had sold him for a nickel each. I looked and pulled one and asked how much? He said $8. I put it back and pulled out another and asked the price, $12. I started laughing and said I was done and left. When they were mine they had little value, and once they were his they instantly became priceless. I then explained why I was done. Even as a kid he was a nut.
Follow Ups:
you are being too kind in your description of him!
That same day I picked up a Technics SP25 table from him for $30, so it was worth the trip. Plus he is RIP, so I didn't see a need to dig him up. :)
Later Gator,
Dave
