I have a 1980 portable Mono ZENITH AM/FM Tape Player Recorder, that I need to replace the Head on! I have the service manual, but was wondering if I could even still get a head for it? I know it won't be the Factory replacement from Zenith, but just wondering if there is a suitable replacement,as I still want to use it to play & record tapes?
Thought of this place but have not contacted them yet!Zenith usually had JVC or Pioneer build their Tape units, both Mono & stereo!
Follow Ups:
Take a look at your player's play/rec head.
Does it look like that in the pic attached?

You might want to send him an email - this is a fairly old thread.
:)
NOS unit in box on ebay now, with make offer option. Then use your unit
for spare parts. Or wait until a used one shows up.
He excepted my offer! Thanks again for your help! I was watching that auction close before & then it just disappeared, until he relisted it again!
That's great!. "I love it when a plan comes together"...

Thank you! I will check it out!
No sweat! I simply google searched Zenith R60, and there it was.
Offer low at first, if it's refused, go $5. higher. I doubt
you'll have any competition on that sort of item.
I am going to try that!
Have you looked for possible replacements? Might be something out there now that would do a better job and be less trouble. Shouldn't cost too much to get the recording quality that unit is capable of.

I know most here would not bother with something like this!I just really have enjoyed using this in the past & want to replace the head if I can get one for it!I know someone, who said they can put the new head in if I find one.So my only cost would be just the replacement head!He has fixed many Tape decks for himself. It even has an auxiliary input, for which I have used, too with my Smartphone, etc.Been watching that famous auction sight just in case another one comes along or a NOS tape head shows up reasonable enough! So any help at all would be appreciated!
OK, Have you determined that the head is actually bad not just very dirty. Peer inside to see - can the cassette cover come off? How many heads are visible?
The deck was probably made in Japan - if so the head (it's probably a single head used for both record and play - maybe a separate erase head) were probably made by Panasonic. Good luck in trying to find a part number unless there is one on the head itself.
Nortronics in the US made a lot of replacement heads for cassette players. They had a catalog which you might find on line listing the brand/model numbers and a cross-reference to their heads. But again, finding one today????

As I intimated, there is a Nortronics cassette tape head replacement guide available on-line. Your Zenith model number is not listed in it.
Still not gonna give up! I have been looking all over the internet as I feel something will turn up at what I would consider a reasonable price!
My friend showed me the corrosion on the center of the record/play head! Was able to remove some of the corrosion, but he said the head is really not able to be saved and would have to be replaced.I have the ZENITH Service manual which list the part # as 942-232 for the record/play Head & 942-233 erase head.Thank you for your help!
