Hi guys, just a quick question. I want to do some tape recording with my trusty Ampex 800, and am out of new reels. Is there any newly made tape which can substitute for Quantegy/Ampex 631? I seem to recall that the pro quality tapes require significantly different bias than my old consumer machine can muster up.

Of the three tape brands still being manufactured, the Capture brand is probably the best match for home-consumer machines. It's available from Splicit, also available on eBay.

What sort of machine/bias are you running it at? My application isn't too critical, but I would like to make sure it's not way off.

Machines (2) are Otari MX5050 BII . Bias was set for Maxell UD last time it was changed. Since I use every kind of tape known to man, I haven't messed with bias changes. I know I should but life's too short :-)
there is a seller on ebay who has NOS pancakes of 631 or 632 pretty reasonably priced. may want to check that out.

Type 631 is 1.5mil voice-grade tape (185 nW/m) and 632 is LNHO duplicating tape (whatever that is), also 185 nW/m. This from the Ampex tape list compiled by Scott Dorsey.
Do you know who actually makes Capture? I was eyeing 930, as a good replacement for the old normal bias Quantegy/Ampex/Scotch/Realistic tapes I used to run. I'm using it for recording family memories at 7.5IPS, I want to have higher fidelity than a cassette will give, but not interested in investing in new equipment. The Ampex makes great recordings as is on 631. I also prefer to use tape, because it's kind of an event to sit down and listen to "the tape", whereas a digital file just gets lost among all the other files.
The Capture tape is a new formulation developed by Splicit, it's not a re-brand of any existing tape. I've read somewhere the OEM is the same OEM that produced Zonal tape back in the day, but this is an exclusive new formula. Contact the owner at Splicit, I'm sure he can fill you in on the details.

Max, dude,You're barkin' up the wrong tree.
Forget about "archiving" family memories onto tape. Sounds like they're already on tape, and you want to make a copy.
If you want to have a "listening event", that's one thing, but if you want to have a "permanent" archive, that's another.
I recommend copying/digitilating the recordings, and then making a CD.
"Digitilating". That was pretty good. I made that up all by myself.

Edit: I still have 3 new 10" reels of Quantegy 499. I'll sell them for $500 a reel. Yeah, I'm keepin' 'em.

What I've been doing, is since daughter was very little, we record an interview every year or so, on the same tape. It's fun to listen to the interviews, because she starts off as being barely able to talk, and now she's just about a teenager. We listen to the whole thing before adding a new segment, and then after it's recorded put it away for another year. We've hit the end of the first tape though, and I'd like to get another to continue the tradition.As for archiving it, sure, can always record it to digital, but it's more interactive and exciting to have the big reels turning. And although fidelity isn't a primary consideration, it does sound very good, like her younger self is still there in the room with me. I use a pretty good mic and record in mono, and keep the level up high. On the 800, you really need to use 7.5ips to get good sound, but I do and it works well.
