Has the package actually not arrived or does it show waiting for pickup/signature? The tracking data should tell you.
Like Wendell said, the 'if possible' should mean that you're ok. If it appears that he hasn't picked up the item, then I'd email him and ask if there's a problem.

on my account and will reimburse the buyer in full, including shipping.
That sucks.
Is the money in your Paypal account where Paypal can steal it? If not, I'd close the checking account linked to it along with any credit card linked to Paypal and close the Paypal account.
Screw them.

I always keep 0 dollars in my paypal account. I intend to do what you suggested. I'm sure paypal will come chasing me.
I believe the package arrives tomorrow. I have already exchanged emails with the buyer, who is incensed, vulgar and not understanding of what happened. He has said he will refuse the delivery. I offered to totally refund him and he said he would pursue a claim with paypal. I can't see paypal honoring a claim because the item was sent and delivered. Of course, if it gets returned to me, Paypal will refund the buyer. As a seller, I prescribe to "the customer is always right" approach. But, when I recieve derogatory and inflammatory emails, all bets are off. What is to stop the buyer from refusing to accept any items because of buyers remorse of change of heart?
You have right to deduct cost of shipping.Just be sure that you have all the correspondence in line. Particularly one that he said that he prefers, not insists, on FedEx.
I would side with him if he had said that he gives you an offer under the condition that it is sent by FedEx. For example, I always insist on FedEx (when I have choice) as I am not at home during the day and FedEx is 10 minutes from me. USPS is about 1 hour drive.

No, he did not make shipping via FedX a condition of the sale. He refused the delivery. Paypal will not refund the shpping cost to me. That is between the buyer and I; so, I will not be receiving this cost back.
The paypal agent said this is he first time he has ever heard of a package being returned and a claim iniiated because the buyer didn't like the shipper.
I asked paypal what prevents any buyer from refusing delivery for any bogus reason - they didn't have an answer. So, all of us that buy audio gear on ebay, AA, or Audiogon, use paypal and, feel free to change your mind about the purchase AFTER you have paid for it and it has been shipped. Refuse delivery and Voila, we will be reimbursed in full and the seller will be stuck with relisting fees and shipping and insurance both ways.
You need to post his screen name so no one else gets involved with him/or her.
I would but I don't think he is on AA. The deal was on Audiogon.
Doesn't matter where he is. Post his name and handle as a service to Inmates.
I don't care where/who he is. Do us all a favor and post his name for all to see.

Screw him if he gets nasty and abusive. Contact UPS and cancel delivery. I'd sooner lose the shipping $$$. Plus, if he is being an ass, why trust him to do the right thing AFTER he gets it? To NOT claim fake damage or wrong item. Sure seems like you have bent over backwards to please him, and it's not working, so get as far away from him as possible.
Years ago I worked in an audio shop. Some guy ordered and paid for a high-dollar item, but added a long list of stipulations. Figuring we could NEVER make him happy, we sent his check back and told him (nicely) to find another seller.
You are correct. Some people are strange, very strange. It was startling to see the comments he posted on the paypal dispute file. I think he is out of control.
Thanks and I do agree with you.
