You have right to deduct cost of shipping.
Just be sure that you have all the correspondence in line. Particularly one that he said that he prefers, not insists, on FedEx.
I would side with him if he ahd said that he gives you an offer under the condition that it is sent by FedEx. For example, I always insist on FedEx (when I have choice) as I am not at home during the day and FedEx is 10 minutes from me. USPS is about 1 hour drive.
