Looking for any suggestions for female artists with great vocals and accompanying music. Some that I currently have in my collection are
1 Beth Orton
2 Natalie Merchant
3 Sarah McLaughlin
4 Enya
5 Alison Krauss [ really like her latest "A Hundred Miles or More" ]
6 Stevie Nicks
7 Lucinda Williams
And a few that were previously brought to my attention here at AA...
8 Patty Griffin etc...
Any suggestions will be very appreciated.
Regards,
/// Tim W. ///
Follow Ups:
Those glorious altos Mahalia Jackson and Mavis Staples; Aretha Franklin, and, in case no-one's yet mentioned them, Dusty Springfield and the silky Dionne Warwick.
Others have already mentioned Gillian Welch and Emmylou, but I didn't notice the name T-A-M-M-Y-W-Y-N-E-T-T-E anywhere below. That's got me stumped, for sure.
Cheers
Ken
see a video for The Story on Amazon
Thanks! She sounds like she could have a long career in front of her, I purchased it at borders on my trek home, Ill add her debut album in due time.
Regards,
/// Tim W. ///
I didn't find the songwriting on the debut to be as mature as on The Story" but that might just be me. Glad you liked it. It will definitely hook you for a couple of weeks. The same way Mindy Smith does.
"how Long Has This Been Going On" with Oscar Peterson, Joe Pass, Ray Brown and Louie Belson and "Send In The Clowns" with Count Basie, both on Pablo, are easy to find and fabulous.
If the recs are supposed to be more modern, where's Bonnie Raitt? Got an LP of her with Clapton here somewhere...
I mentioned "Sarah" (implying Vaughan).....
Thanks for the rec on Raitt.... I checked her out on YouTube..... This is good stuff....
She is a fabulous performer with GREAT stage presence... Lennox, Streisand, Ross and Minnelli all consumate entertainers...of course for those no longer with us, you'd have to add Garland , Holiday, Cline, K. Carpenter and Eva Cassidy to the mix
n.t.
Not one female, but three. Exquisite harmonies and great, moody music (IMO). How could I forget 'em?
all the best,
mrh
each and every post below - one singer who is far too often overlooked (in the Jazz vein) is Rosemary Clooney. Start with "Everything's Coming Up Rosie" on Concord Jazz
"Man is the only animal that blushes - or needs to" Mark Twain
Probably still unknown in US, though.

Thanks!
Excellent recīs troughout the thread. I wil add Lisa Gerrard either as a solo artist ( duality, inmortal memory) or as Dead can dance( into the labirynth, serpentīs egg).
Or the soundtracks for Gladiator, Insider.
Can't believe I forgot to mention her. I listen to her often but because she doesn't sing any words forget about her in threads like this.
I think I'll go spin Immortal Memory right now.
Don't piss on my shoe and tell me it's raining.
Mindy Smith
Kathleen Edwards - Failer
Erin McKeown
Cat Power
Concrete Blonde
Cowboy Junkies
Throwing Muses/Kristin Hersh
Patty Griffin
Gillian Welch
Kasey Chambers (listening right now to Barricades & Brickwalls)
To named but a few....
I don't always have much of, its very important for me to Thank all of you for your time and if I missed anyone consider this as my token of...
In closing Id like to add..
The simple but understated nature of all your efforts are what keeps me here both as a contributor and occasional informant. You've all saved me lots of research and TIME which as I said is minimal!
Most all of your suggestions were very unique and I'm looking forward to checking them out through the forum sponsors. Enjoy your weekend folks.

allmusic.com can answer a lot of your questions in one place, and provide more leads as well. Happy hunting.

Even better!!! Nancy King, the greatest jazz singer alive today.
You can hear both on Karrin Allyson new cd %22Footprints%22

Will do!
. . . Bjork. Though not to everyone's taste, in fact she seems to invoke a love/hate response with little middle ground, I find her use of voice as an instrument fascinating. "Vespers" is a good starting point. I haven't heard the new one yet though
Your description of her voice as an instrument is what gets my blood flowing in this hobby. Ill purchase "Vespers" as per your suggestion, looking forward to this!
Thanks again troporobo....

not Vespers. Anyway I like her a lot, but she's not everybody's idea of a good time. Try to find a track or two to listen on line and see what you think. BTW her career started as singer for Icelandic band The Sugarcubes, also worth looking for
She's got the pipes and does lots of styles. I'll second Neko Case for somebody newer.
So I must give her a go. By chance what genre of music is her sound geared towards.
Thanks again, MylesJ...

Sorry for the late reply. I was away over the holiday. It is more a questions what she does not sing. I've not heard her do loud rock or opera.
Jackaro has commented on the influence of Patsy Cline. I'm usually not big on that kind of music but KD's Absolute Torch and Twang is a great album.
There is a new Joni Mitchell tribute album out with KD singing Help Me. She can really hold a note with effortless pure tone.
Here's the allmusic entry for her
http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:ajftxqt5ldje
In case you don't know, allmusic is a great resource. You'll find bios, band histories, descriptions of style, influences and usually song samples for almost any band or individual that has had any amount of commercial success, and some that haven't.
You'll find Patsy Cline as an influence for k.d.lang, check her out too.

Artist suggestions! These are the very grounds I'm looking to expand my horizons into. Never heard of these female artists - but well give em a go!
Again, new territory, exciting!

Sandy Denny - Solo work, Fotheringay, and Fairport Convention
Maddy Prior - Solo Work, Steeleye Span, Silly Sisters
Annie Haslam - Solo work, Reniassance
Shirly Collins - Mostly solo, 1st Albion Country Dance Band
I read through this thread and I did not see Ella Fitzgerald. It is not likely anyone is her equal, but when you state you want to her vocals and musicians there is no one that had better orchestration than Ella.
The definitive female vocalist that all others are measured against is Ella Fitzgerald .
DaveT
Click my "Ilaria Graziano" post.... Although I just called her "Ella".....
Agreed, but there was something in the original post, i.e. the list of artists, that suggested that he was not interested in that sort of thing.
Or Gloria Lynne, Carmen McRae, Dinah Washington, Etta Jones, Anita ODay, SARAH VAUGHN, Lorez Alexander, Nancy Wilson...
I was misleading in my request or perhaps not request specific.
That being said I'm very open and receptive to most suggestions. I suppose Opera and most importantly no RAP would be my only caveats.

Understood, but no apologies necessary. It was my inference that may have been a bit premature.
Enjoy your new discoveries!
Thanks,

Billie Holiday, Peggy Lee, Lena Horne, Judy Garland, Rosemary Clooney, Jo Stafford, Keeley Smith, Julie London, Cleo Lane, Helen Forrest.
Barney
Dinah Shore, Patti Page, Helen O'Connell, Aretha Frankllin, Teresa Brewer, Kay Starr, Ertha Kitt, Frances Langford, Patsy Cline, Connie Boswell, Pearl Bailey, Jane Morgan, Connie Francis, Jane Morgan, Kate Smith, Nina Simone, Eydie Gorme, Bessie Smith.
Than Aretha Franklin and perhaps Patsy Cline who Ive perhaps read about in my scribes most of these are ALL new to me. Are they all still performing today?
I also appeciate live music in smaller venues.
Ill do my best to check them out.
Thanks BarneyT...

most of the singers mentioned in this "Astounded" sub thread are deceased. However, in their day, many were consistently among the leading Hit Parade singers, and are considered to be among the all-time greats in the history of jazz and popular music. As someone mentioned, "Allmusic.com" and "Wikipedia.com" are great resources for learning about the lives and discographies of these legendary singers. You may even find some video clips on the YouTube website.

Listen to the CDs "Soviet Kitsch" or "Begin to Hope"

Been wanting to check out Mary Chapin but shes escaped my memory at crucial purchase times. Shawn Colvin? Well check it out.
Regards,
/// Tim W. ///
Julie Andrews, Ella, Billie, Sarah, Diana Ross, early Rondstadt, Eva Cassidy.....
And of course, my earlier rec, Ana Torroja.....
Artists I recall from my youth but honestly, had not considered or really even given thought to. I do recall D.Ross and the Supremes from the Motown years, good stuff.
If your referring to Billie Holiday that's another artist I'm not familiar with but I love jazz from the "golden era" .Ditto the above comments to Ella.
Your youtube video was enjoyable and the vocals are sublime but this music may be a bit to eccentric for my current tastes. More effort would be required on my part for this most challenging music!
And Thanks Again Todd Krieger, for taking the time out to share what appears to be your vast musical knowledge, and bringing out some forgotten artists through your suggestions that were overlooked by me but are still valued here.
Sometimes Im looking to hard, when the gift is right under my nose!

Aimee Mann, Marianne Faithful, Nico, Petra Haden w/Bill Frisell, Isobel Campbell w/Mark Lanegan, Low.
Artist I currently have. Most of her music is excellent IMHO, But the MoFi SACD Hybrids are exceptional. Petra Haden, never heard of her but I'm a huge fan of Bill Frisells music so this one is a must.
Thanks again Dave Garriston, for your valued and timely response.
Enjoy your weekend!

Petra Haden is the daughter of jazz bassist Charlie Haden. The album is *Petra Haden and Bill Frisell*(Sovereign/2005). Exquisite, ethereal voice, backed with violin & electric guitar. Interpretations of songs by Elliot Smith/Dave Grohl/Coldplay/Gershwin/Mancini/Stevie Wonder). For my money the best female vocal album of 2005.

Don't piss on my shoe and tell me it's raining.
Patti Griffins Flamming Reds a favorite!
The others will be duly noted as I ....
Thank You sjb; for taking the time.

Ive seen and briefly listened to Evas Songbird on occasion when occasionally stopping at Borders, its so sad she passed from Cancer.
Funny how "some" just aren't appreciated until its too late. Perhaps Ill now purchase some of her music. Her story may be a testimony to us all about the very important values that are right in front of us all, and to appreciate, Today.
Thank you, RioTubes for your very valued response.

Some of my favourite females...
Mary Black - Irish, Folky
PJ Harvey - Indie - Technically not a great voice, but it fits the music well
Kate Bush
Joni Mitchell
Tanya Donnelly - last album - This Hungry Life
Margo Timmins - Cowboy Junkies
Harriet Wheeler of The Sundays
Cheerswelly
I went to a restaurant that serves "breakfast at any time". So I ordered French Toast during the Renaissance.
And Thank You for your very unique list of performers. The only one Ive heard of is Joni Mitchell and I have her Blue on HDCD. Nice system BTW and you got a keeper in that Linn!!
Excellent diversity and well give them a go!

Syd Straw
Bebel Giberto
Astrud Gilberto
Joan Baez
Judy Collins
The Roches (sisters trio)
Joan Armatrading
Misty River (quartet, wonderful americana)
For your list of favorites, again Joan Baez is about the only one I recognise, and that's a GOOD thing!
The Misty River sounds intriguing.

but are worth seeing, or hearing:
+Les Sampu - bluesy folk
+Laura Love - funky, afro-celtic vocal gymnast and plays bass in her band
+Christine Lavin - singer/songwriter and great entertainer
+Carrie Newcomer
as for groups:
+Sweet Honey in the Rock - Amazing vocals.
+Saffire, the Uppity Blues Women - fun to see live
+Ellen MacIllwain - slide guitar. Saw her put on the spot w/o her rhythm section at the last minute. Just her and an electric guitar, winging it. Very impressed.
a few names left out of my previous post:
+Mary Chapin Carpenter
+Dar Williams
+Maria Muldar - can still bring it
+Susan Tedeschi - another blues woman
+Bonnie Raitt - can't lever her out
Finally, I don't mind watching a little Cecilia Bartoli
I really like and appreciate your added input as to live venues, nice twist and Thanks again for your time and input.
Have a great weekend!
Regards,
/// Tim W. ///
Neko Case. Great big ballsy voice on minute, then she gets all torch songy on you - excellent. Furnace Room Lullaby is my personal favorite.
Shelby Lynne. From Nashville, definitely some country in her, but also R&B, rock, gospel... She's a great songwriter and tremendous singer. Her sister Allison Moorer is very good too, though with a little less range.
Rickie Lee Jones first album (from the 70s) is superb - I just kind of (re)discovered it after buying a really good CD player!
There's Joni - too obvious?
I don't know what k.d. Lang is up to any more, but she has a great voice and put out some good records a while back. Amazing voice, big lungs, as they say.
Love her or hate her, but you might listen to some Kate Bush. Different, anyway. Try Hounds of Love.
And of course, the still great Emmylou Harris.
There's a few.
Aram
only read about them as I recognise theyre names but I look forward to adding them to my growing Library!
Thanks for your time AWACS...

See? NT.
A great guitarist and songwriter and a good vocalist (nope, not great)... but a great package. Try before you buy on Youtube.
Also (and this might not quite count), Margo Timmins (i.e., Cowboy Junkies). I love to hear her whisper/sing. Try her version of the Dead's "To Lay me Down" on "Deadicated". Absolutely beautiful.
come to think of it... Ms Joni Mitchell wasn't on your list?
all the best,
mrh
And Thank you for the thoughtful clip. Yes my apologies as in my haste for new suggestions I failed to list a few artists and Mrs Mitchell was one of those.
Your tip of the hat to Margo Timmins sounds delicious! Looking forward to hearing your suggestion " Dedicated".

Cat Power - "You Are Free" and "The Greatest"
It meanms alot and is appreciated.

+June Tabor - dark, musky English folk
+Eva Cassidy - probably on a lot of people's short list
+Joan Osborne - always thought she could belt out a pretty good tune
+Rosanne Cash - intelligent writing and nice voice
+Annie Haslam - the voice of Renaissance
+Mary Fahl - the voice of October Project
+Karan Casey - sweet Irish voice
+Mary Black - another good singer (among many others) from Ireland
+Anne Hills - an exquisite singer (folk)with a crystal clear voice. For some fine singing, try "Voices" by Herdman, Hills & Mangsen
+Iris DeMent &
+Mary McCaslin - two very distinct voices, but very enjoyable
+Rory Block - country blues singer and quite the guitar player
+and oh so many more
Best voice in the business, right now.....
...I'm listing my favorite albums they've done:
Joan Armatrading - her self-titled album and "Show Some Emotion"
Bonnie Raitt - just about any of hers over the past 30 years
Linda Ronstadt - "Heart Like a Wheel", "Hasten Down the Wind", "Simple Dreams"
Shawn Colvin - "Steady On"
Loreena McKinnet - "The Mask and the Mirror"
In a more jazzy or easy listening vein:
Diana Krall - "Love Scenes", "When I Look in your Eyes"
Patrica Barber - "Companion" and others (more of an acquired taste)
Jane Monheit - "Come Dream with Me"
Cassandra Wilson - her latest got good reviews but I have not heard it yet
For your feedback. My apologies as I failed to list Dianna Krall and Patricia Barber in my initial post, your opinion on Barbers music mirrors my own. Acquired taste as it grows on you with time, much favored like a fine wine. JBTW that live album Companion recorded at the Green Mill is scary realistic at times, how about the acoustic bass strings in track four, seemingly splitting my house in two!!!
Your suggestions are valued and on my list.
BEST...
