In Reply to: RE: Newfound respect for 1950-60's Alnico full range drivers! posted by morricab on October 23, 2024 at 03:59:42
I'm afraid this success is going to lead me deeper into the vintage rabbit hole. I can appreciate the immaculate measurements and technicalities of modern drivers like Purifi, Textreme, Berylium, etc, but this 12" Alnico paper cone really has the low-midrange presence to die for, especially playing 1950's-60's music.
Follow Ups:
Fukuin/Pioneer PIM-8L (also known as PIM-200 in metric places, and also sold under myriad house brand names, e.g., Lafayette SK-98) in Silbatone Bae (named for their designer) boxes. These enclosures were designed (empirically, AFAIK) for Western Electric 755 drivers and their Altec descendents.
The Pioneer PIM-8L were/are dual-compliance "full-range" ;) drivers; i.e., very similar in concept, and fairly similar in execution to the larger (12" and 15") Altec Biflex drivers.
The Lafayette "SK-98" in this photo is a PIM-8L (indeed, it is one of the cosmetically mismatched pair of drivers I am currently using!). The other two drivers in this picture are smaller Pioneers.
In practice, they are a bit ;) bass-shy, but the quality of midrange, especially vocals, that they produce is quite remarkable.

A Sony 2251 TT, and an early '70s A77.
I guess you're not such a bad guy after all. :)

I know the A77 is "early '70s" (maybe mid), because, as a music student in Switzerland in '73 and '74, my mentor had two of them. Cosmetic differences tell what "vintage" they are.
Here's my 2251 TT and A77 Mk-IV, both acquired in about '78. TT used, for $50 (plus cart), and A77 new, 2-track 7-1/2 and 15 ips.
