Guys, I'm now 69 and I LOVE visiting here but sadly my health is declining rapidly. Unfortunately, that previous sentence explains it all! My spine is slowly rotting away so I live in constant excruciating pain and sadly because of the "opioid crisis" they've actually cut back my entire break-through pain meds by 100%, and my regular pain meds by 33%!!!!
Add to that I've developed Bronchiectasis, which is a condition in which the lungs' airways become damaged, making it hard to clear mucus. Bronchiectasis most likely developed due to my previously having chronic bronchitis. In my case the mucus constantly builds up and breeds bacteria, causing frequent infections. My symptom includes a daily loud, almost continuous cough at times, that will most likely continue over the next months or years and daily production of large amounts of phlegm. (Try having that during the Covid crisis and watch all the hate stares you'll get) It's gotten so bad I've agreed to be put in a trial drug study!
I didn't want to dump a lot of garbage on you all, I just wanted you all to know the honest reason why my few posts are so brief and why I seldom come back and respond to questions these days. OK?
Love you, guys...

Tom,
Sorry you are dealing with these issues. My wife is a Respiratory Therapist and I hear about what she deals with (anonymously, of course) pretty much every night after she has worked. I'm 67 with numerous conditions (three heart procedures, blood clots, diabetic) so I can kind of relate. Stay positive and keep listening!
I'm lucky - my wife listens with me, especially to jazz piano of all eras. When I met her she had the complete Monk/Coltrane on Blue Note playing - a first for me.

I'm sorry to hear of your condition and wish for you the best of course - hang tough
Damn Tom, really sorry to hear these issues befalling you. I hope you can still take some pleasure from music listening but I understand if the pain you are in is limiting even this pleasure activity.
Sorry to hear about your health issues Tom. Unfortunately, health issues accumulate as we age. Maybe go out and purchase some new pieces of audio equipment to help take your mind off your issues:)
In addition to the good health suggestions made by others, I can add to that. To reduce the amount of phlegm, avoid the consumption of dairy of any kind. Certain of the proteins in dairy are difficult to digest and they are secreted by the body in the bronchial tubes and contribute to the quantity of phlegm.

Here's a link to an old newspaper article I wrote about turmeric. Several times a week, my wife and I concoct a pleasant and potent tea from sliced fresh ginger and turmeric. But in its dried and powdered form, turmeric's anti-inflammatory effects are even more powerful. Turmeric's principal active ingredient is curcumin, which occurs in even higher concentrations in ginger, as well as in cumin. In the commercial capsules, you will often find the addition of piperine, an ingredient found in black or white pepper (piper nigrum). Piperine increases curcumin's potency dramatically, which is why we add a pinch of pepper to our tea cup. Alas, while it won't roll back the years, it may help with what my brother calls his Arthur Godfrey. http://www.chefhenry.com/everything-you-ever-wanted-to-know-about-turmeric-but-were-afraid-to-ask.html

Best wishes to you, and best of luck with your juggling act with all the meds you are taking! I hope that horns, triodes and some good music help. Also missed from down your way is Paul Butterfield, who we have'nt heard from or about for some time. I thought of him after the mention of the Nelson Pass Kleinhorn in the Lowther post below, when he once commented "Nelson Pass learns a wee bit about horns" after that horn appeared.
Anyway, best wishes to you both!
Paul
Good luck with the drug trial!
Tom, I appreciate your honesty and regard for your fellow Asylum members. It is my prayer that your ills may be lessened and your pain diminish. As a fellow geezer I understand how life catches up with us and we have to just do the best we can. God bless and keep you.
I dream of an America where a chicken can cross the road without having it's motives questioned.
Hello Tom, sorry to hear about your health problems, and especially your pain issues, I know from personal experience just how bad that can be. Take care and stop by the Asylum when you're feeling up to it, those of us who followed your posts miss you. All the best, Dave
It may not help you, but turmeric has significantly reduced my back pain for the last twelve years. Before taking it I had periodic bouts of sciatica, I haven't had one since. I used to take Vicodin for that, haven't used it since starting on turmeric. It's not a pain reliever, it's an anti-inflammatory supplement. You need to take it every day, just like a vitamin. It takes a few weeks to build up in your system. I still get a sore back, but when I do it lasts a day or two, not a week or two. I've linked one source, search around for the best pricing. https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/top-10-evidence-based-health-benefits-of-turmeric#TOC_TITLE_HDR_12

They sell jars of Ground Tumeric at Costco, as seen 2 days ago, in Michigan.
You can get ground turmeric in just about any grocery store, but it's not something you want to eat as part of every meal, unless you're into Indian food. Capsules are a lot more user friendly.
Are there specific brands, dose or concoctions you take? For awhile I was taking Turmeric and mixing it with ginger or cinnamon to make it palpable using it in my meals. That had limited success as it wasn't practical every day.
While not a show stopper yet the arthritis in my wrists and elbow is more noticeable and the effects of a childhood hip dislocation can get to me if I push too hard.

I take a 500mg capsule with every meal. It's more effective if taken with black pepper, which is OK with me as I have black pepper as part of most meals. If you don't have black pepper as a regular part of your diet get capsules that combine turmeric with piperine/bioperine, but you should have black pepper as part of your diet as it's also an anti-inflammatory. I buy whatever is the most economical, which is usually Puritans Pride.
Thanks, just a coincidence I'm sure but I had the Puritans pride web page up.
I was just adding to the list of available sources. Indian food is fine except for the ghi. I agree about capsules being quicker and maintance free to ingest.
Thank you for the info Bill, sounds promising, I'll ask my doctor about it.
Your doctor may or may not be aware of its benefits. It's a supplement, not a drug. Drug companies inundate doctors with sales pitches, it's what resulted in the opioid crisis. Supplement makers don't. There's also the matter of supplements that don't work, which is most of them. That gives them all a bad name.
There's a lot of buzz about turmeric now, but there wasn't when I started taking it, so I had to do my own research. I discovered that people in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh don't suffer arthritis pain at anywhere near the rate that the rest of the world does. They have the same or even higher incidence of arthritis, but not the pain levels. The reason is turmeric. It's a primary ingredient of curry, which they practically live on. It also may reduce the incidence of Covid deaths. In the earlier stages of the pandemic it wasn't Covid that caused most of the deaths, it was lung inflammation that accompanied Covid. The death rate in India was a tenth that of the US.
Such As: Tumeric, Citrus Bergamot, Pterostilbene, Telomeres Up., Tru Niagen,
Betab sitosterol, Green Lipped Muscles ---{NOTHING HAS HELPED BETTER FOR OVER THE COUNTER PAIN REDUCTION}--- you won't get high, but you won't have pain either! And I also take a combination pill of Royal Bee Jelly, Bee Pollen, and Bee Propolis...
