you wanker.
Actually I have never heard a speaker better than the Klipschorn, and from certain perspectives that sounds like I either have bad ears or don't get out much.
That's why I own a pair and have since 1979.
From my viewpoint, the detractors have never heard khorns with the proper amplification or in a proper room, both of which they desperately need to truly sing.
The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts.

I agree....the K-Horns are all about the set-up.
I owned 2 pair at one point. One had proper room and orientation and were glorious..... the other pair had nowhere near optimal anything and were sub-par on just about every level.
They NEED proper room and treatments. Otherwise they become, essentially, PA speakers. GREAT PA speaker, but PA speakers nonetheless.
A funny memory that I have is when I first got the second pair I had all 4 in one room for a little while while I was moving stuff around to make space. (The purchase was unplanned, but they showed up in the local classifieds for $900, so I grabbed them.) At the time I had a mac 240 running in mono on each speaker in my primary pair, but had swithced them back over to stereo with one on each pair. They had only been there for a day or two at the time of this story and I hadn't even decided what to really do with them.
When I was on my way home from work one night, my roomates had apparently decided it would be ok to turn them up and "see what they could do".
Well....I couldn't HEAR the music from that far away as I was walking down my street, but I could SEE all the windows shaking in the whole house as reflected in the streetlights! It took me a few seconds to realize what was going on. At first I thought I was seeing things blurry, because all the windows were vibrating and my mind had trouble figuring out what was happening. As I got closer to the house and started to actually hear the music... I HAD to laugh! They were playing the sound-track from Saturday Night Fever and there were about 10 people dancing their ass off in living room along with a whole bunch of empty bottles. Quite the site from outside the house!! Frankly.....it didn't hurt the speakers one bit to be "opened" up a bit outside their normal levels. Might have even helped them!
Anyways...a good memory.
Not sure I had much to begin with...
Certain Klipsch speakers are pretty good speakers. They have a decent basic design and used some decent parts. But any of those models tend to sell for more money than they are really worth, are large, and require certain things of your room. But in the right situation they can sound good and for someone who hasn't heard horns, are very impressive indeed.
Sadly most of the other Klipsch speakers fall into a group where first impressions might be high but long term listening pleasure is lacking. As your speaker listening experiences grow they get on your nerves and they have to go.
So for often less money (if ugly and big is okay), you could buy Altec and despite they also having flaws, you could end up with something you'd never part with. And that would make us happier (and we hope you too!).
Too bad you aren't willing to make some sawdust or put something together. I actually started to write you a long post down below about a recent experience a few of us had at another members house. I'll keep it short and simply say that once we heard this guy's DIY speakers we all understood that we had never, ever, at any store, at any price, heard speakers that were remotely in the same league. That day changed us and we all went home and started plans to build. In fact I recently bought some of that members speakers as he was moving.

I'd love to hear what type of DIY speakers got you all excited~!
Stage accompany ribbon tweeters (very nice), pair of galaxy audio for mid-range, pair of 12" eminence for mid bass, quad of 15" eminence for low bass. All line level active crossover. Some tube and some solid state amps, CD source with manheim steamroller (which I had never heard).
Not as intimate as lowthers/good jazz/vinyl/DHT's....but it freakin rocked the house in a foundation/window ratteling way that our systems couldn't touch and wasn't far behind on the rest.
What can I say, we was ruined:)

Got the plans?
No plans, not my speakers but I'll link you to one of Scot L pics. I don't think this would be the place to start. I went with an 18sound XT1086 horn and their ND1090 compression driver, the Audax PR170MO mid-range on an open baffle, and I'll being trying to work Scott's 12" and 15" drivers into the mix this weekend perhaps.
My other friend used the Heil as a tweeter and same mid-range on an open baffle. The other guy had Lowthers and went with the BasZilla which you can buy plans for (and it is a very nice speaker but I couldn't afford it).

P.S. Good luck and speakers are a bitch. You might look at the Pi speaker site for some ideas/concepts
Speakers are a pain! Those wouldn't be allowed in the living room...
I feel like I am going about this back assward. Trying to find a pair of speakers I like because I want to build a SET kit. I have another pair to listen to as the manufacturer is somewhat nearby. Even if I end up like others and disliking Klipsch long-term (whose to say) it is easy to get the money back while I have something enjoyable to listen to while I figure it out. And $400-$700 isn't a lot of money as far as good speakers go.
What did you do with the 12"?
I've been thinking that a 15" like the Eminence Basslite C2515 Neo in a sealed box might be just the cats meow for the 75-150 range.

.
If the price is right, and the plans are simple enough, I might be willing to try DIY. I build Bottlehead kits but it is the woodworking that intimidates me. And making sure I have a really proven design. I look at the Klipsch speakers and think, I like them. Then I think (truly had this though earlier:)It can't be that hard to make a pair yourself and put in even better horns and a better woofer and get some real results with better components in the crossover for about the same price. So, though there actually is a speaker or two that I want to hear still, I am open to some ideas that I feel are within my capability for building.
