I dropped off a Fisher mono receiver "Custome Futura" at a local restoration house today. After he learned I was somewhat knowledgable of loudspeakers, he asked me to take a look at some Klipsch K-horns he just aquired buy purchasing an entire elderly's guy collection of about 10 Mac pieces and these. I was completely awestruck. A pair of mid '50's K-horns in almost immaculate condition. University compression drivers, WOODEN horns a smaller what looked like an add on supertweeter, did not really have time to write the numbers down. I guess he got a good deal on the lot, I asked about what he was looking to get for the pair, he thought around $1000/pr. I'm not a real opportunist when it comes to dealing with contemporaries, I told him I wasnt an expert on these, especially of this vintage, but he may want to start over $5K, and expect about 100 calls a week and people fighting over them. I'm sure much more at auction. I know numbers are important, but these top of the line from that genre, any thoughts?

When he asked $1K for them, it means he paid $200-$400 for them and he's willing to come down to $800 on them. Klipsch never used the greatest drivers, mainly Eminence or similar OEM's that were cheaper than the regular stock. He's not going to look for any $5K. If he's in the business he knows the market better than a hobbyist. He just wants someone that'll part w/ the cash at the price he wants- that's the only 'favor' he needs!
You can find that vintage everywhere for about $1500,,,,newer ones 2005 for about $5000....Some people just get greedy thinking the older ones have more value. There are too many Khorn out there to hold price up.
The old fibreboard-wood radial horns are interesting but who in their right mind is gonna pay big bucks for University mids and tweets?
Well you never know.
The same mental type that will pay current new car prices with all their safety/performance for a pathetically performing, ~zero safety old car such as an A-H bug-eyed Sprite.
Loud is Beautiful if it's Clean!
$1.5M at auction.

Yes but my Nash Metropolitan will get me from stop light to stop light like any McClaren...And my car Ins. is cheeper too. But on the subject of the Klipschorn....The first thing you do with a Khorn is throw out the guts and put in better quality drivers....They are the cheapest sorry assed components Ive ever heard. And dont let any body tell you otherwise.
I first replaced the mid horns on my La Scalla's with Ahtec 511's using the Klipsh drivers. Then it on was 802's. next came the 515B's and 828 cabs. But then I needed 1005's and 288's. Next up was 2245's in the bottoms of the 828's. I have just ordered up a pair of 400 Hz Tractrix for the 288's. Fortunately I have a understanding wife. I have yet to match her travel budget.

After a similar slope I settled down with Nineteens. AND 605As. AND As-21s. AND 890C Boleros. But all are bone-stock save the 605s which are bi-amped.
in Chicago. They were fry small format Altec drivers. For my new Tractrix horns, what tomes do you suggest for the 1.4" series?

Science fiction gives more space to the sound but philosophy and history give more weight.
