Forgive my ignorance but what would be the equivalent of the GH-1 if it weren't a "special edition" model using maple?
I have the RS1e which I thoroughly enjoy but even my low end SR80 sound decent.
Follow Ups:
Some people are saying that the new GH-1 has a sonic signature that lies somewhere between the PS-500 and the RS-2.
YMMV, of course.
Thanks! I'm not sure that I would hear the difference w/o listening very closely. Or maybe I'm just not a 'headphone guy'. ;-)
Although I enjoy my RS1e I'm still pretty happy with my entry SR80s.
I am thinking the PS500 might be a little closer, but with the G cups the
GH-1 pretty much holds its own.
Thanks! Are the "G Cups" the huge foam ones? I have a pair for my RS1e but decided to leave the stock cups on.
Grado recommends NOT using the big cups on the smaller headphone models, mostly because it skews the intended tonal balance. But some people like using them anyway...
I use them anyway on my 325i.
Comfortable.

It's nice that different cups are available for the Grado headphones. I tried the G cups and preferred the stock ones. The G cups seemed huge on my ears and offered no additional comfort in my case.
I may be in the minority but I actually prefer the open light feeling of Grados vs some other headphones. I find the Grados to be very comfortable.
That's cool.
I just don't like pads pressing on my ears.

I love the unique, feather-lite feeling of my Grado RS-1s with standard hollow earcups. The SR-325's might be the better bargain because they provide about 90% of the performance of the RS-1 for roughly 1/2 the $$$, but they are significantly heavier/less comfortable too.
If anyone wants "heavy", the aluminum-bodied PS-1000 with G-Cups might very well be the boat anchor they are looking for...

I must have been blessed with beginner's luck because I chose the RS1e w/o doing a lot of research. It was in the price range I was I searching for and I wanted wood. I didn't know these are lighter than some of the other Grados, like the aluminum ones you mentioned.
The aluminum bodied SR-325s that I used to own felt like they weighed twice as much as my RS-1s do. The extra weight of the SR-325s was not a real big problem but the luxurious comfort of the RS-1s have spoiled me.And the RS-2s are even lighter than the RS-1s are, by a tiny margin.
