Metal ear cups will also resonate, I don't see a particularly strong advantage here.
If you're going to buy a headphone because it looks cool, there are lots of offerings from Skull Candy that will look cool and cost a lot less.

However, I admit that I care about the looks, but not of the headphones themselves but of the same sitting on my (small) head: you see, these are to be used in the office, so I try to avoid looking like a geek (or dork).
Also, this is the reason I need closed 'phones - maybe my colleagues have less appreciation for Mahler (especially when only hearing part of it).
P.S. Phiaton seem a good choice, however I've read mixed reviews of their Moderna model (or I would have got it long ago: I love the looks, especially in all-black).
But you said that you don't want to look like dork with a small head. No headphone looks all that great on anyone. Some of the most popular ones look the worst to my eyes. Buy some Senns, Beyers, AKGs, or Audeze(s) and get over it. We won't tell.

Fine, I want opinions about the Sennheiser Momentum on-ear headphones and the Grado HP 1 (yes I know these are open-back).

I haven't heard those two, but I can tell you that Grado's "house sound" is usually perceived as being very different from Sennheiser's. The type of sound that suits you best might depend on the musical style(s) that you like most.Sennheiser styling is certainly sleeker and more modern. Grado styling looks chunky and "retro".
I would say that the way more expensive Grado HP-1 would be a better investment, keeping it's resale value should you decide that they are not for you.
Are you sure that you would want open-backed headphones in an office atmosphere? Sound leakage might be sort of annoying to others around you.

I actually like the way the Phiatons sound and they do look pretty good when worn. They are not as transparent sounding as the better, more expensive headphones out there but they do have a nice tonal balance and are non-fatiguing over time.Be aware that "sealed" full-sized headphones can get a bit hot and sweaty when worn for very long. If you work in an air-conditioned office this might not be such a problem, however.
Brand new M-400 Modernas can be found for as little as $150 on Amazon or ebay, around $200 elsewhere.

I'd recommend these. Easily driven by just about any source, sealed and sound great.
And now as they are a discontinued model, they are dirt cheap and worth more than twice the current asking price.
This is exactly what all is about: getting good sound WITHOUT looking like a dork! Otherwise, I would already have solved the problem with a pair of Audeze... except I would look like a turkey trapped between two logs of firewood ;)
depending on the budget there are some very good choices. The Focal Classic is excellent and looks good for 399.00 NAD Viso is excellent and less expensive.
I'd rather wait for them to clean up their act before joining the club!
