I recently purchased a pair of Stax SR-5 Earspeakers, and they have turned me into a headphone junkie. I really enjoy them, and am having great listening sessions with headphones for the first time in my life.
I can't really afford the newer Stax phones, but I see some of the older Lambdas on Ebay for affordable prices, and am wondering what kind of improvements (if any) I could expect with them.
I listen mostly to jazz and small group classical music.
Follow Ups:
... is that electrostatic panels (including headphone panels) often need to be rebuilt in as little as 20 years after production. If they stopped making Lambdas back in 1995, then you might only have a few more years of *un-distorted* listening pleasure left on them. Buyer beware!

That may well be - but the STAX SR-Lambda SR-507 is the current latest outing.
Perhaps this review will shed some light............

Thanks to all the responders. I've posted on Head-fi and read the suggested review and gone to head-case... am learning more and more about the different vintage Stax phones. Pretty sure I'll be looking for a pair of Lambdas.
Any more info would still be highly appreciated.
You could try Head-Case for information. There are many very serious Stax users over there, but the conversation can be rough.

Karl

You might even say that Stax headphones (however tasty they might be) are almost like the mushrooms of the headphone world. They tend to grow secretly along the dark perimeters of the headphone forest. You'd probably have better luck asking this question (or better yet, searching the archives) over there at headfi.
