Closed back is the only way to go if you need noise isolation but not all closed back designs offer really good isolation - some designs are much better at this than others are. Two other major things that the best closed back designs seem to do *differently* are the highest highs and low bass. Highs may not seem as "airy" with closed back 'phones. Closed headphones often provide deeper, more palpable bass than their open headphone equivalents do but "strong and deep" bass is not always the same "clean and refined" bass.
