I own three DVD-A's. Can they be ripped to a computer in WAV, FLAC, or any other format? My goal would be to listen to them thru my Squeezebox at full resolution.
Follow Ups:
A few things.
1) I have a pretty complete how-to on this over on my HiRez Circle at Audio Circle. Feel free to check it out. I've ripped (as have many others) dozens of DVD_A's to their native (24/88.2, 24/96 or 24/192) resolutions for playback via a DAC. But yes, it involves using DVDAexplorer (for true DVD-Audio discs) and DVDAudio Extractor (for DVD-Video discs that contain hirez material).

2) When you use DVDAExplorer and see (in Audio-TS) the group that is listed as Lf-rf-ls-rs or lfe-c then you have the wrong group/title section. There is one below or above it that is listed as 2 channel (l-r). If there is none (Natalie merchant, Beatles Love, etc.) then check off the box that says "gfet stereo downmix" and DVDAExplorer will use the SMART table on the disc to produce a very good downmixed stereo rip.
3) The Squeezebox you refer to will only play natively 24/48 max; everything else playable but is downconverted by SOX (assuming you have latest SqueezeBox Server loaded). The 24/96 capable Squeeze players are Touch and Transporter.
4) The Oppos will, in fact, circumvent DVD-A's old hurdles and output MLP (packed PCM) via the digital outs. They are 16 bit and max 16/192 (assuming you set LPCM for 192 in the set up menu).

None of us should have to go through the trouble of circumventing a format's restrictions just to listen to music we paid for. Unfortunately, ya gotta do what ya gotta do. When I eventually move to computer audio, I'll be doing similar to the very few DVD-As that I have aas well as my SACD collection (not via software, but a hardware work-around)

I do have a question for you. One DVD-A I ripped does not seem to have a straight stereo mix that I can rip, but two tracks listed for each selection...LR-LR-RR, and C-LFE..I tried a down-mix rip and it will none of my playback programs like it.
I can however play the LF RF or C-LFE tracks seperately, but they sound bizare.
Is this bad cd authoring or is there another way to find the stereo mix?
Perhaps someone else has tried ripping it and may be able to give you some pointers or confirm its "rip-ability". I'm not quite sure about the track/disc, but it sounds like it is a multi-channel specific encode and perhaps there are specific instructions on how to do the downmix that are not being translated correctly via your software. This very forum had some discussion a while back about ripping DVD-As, but I don't remember the names of the people involved in the discussions. You may also want to check out computeraudiophile.com to see if anyone there has run into a similar problem with this track/disc.
There are some hardware solutions for getting the digital stream from a DVD-A or SACD player (PCM or converted-to-PCM from each, not the DSD stream). It's probably not worth the expense for 1 or even a few discs, but a large collection may warrant such an investment (a few hundred dollars if you have one of the recommended players). I have a few links that I saved if you are interested. This will probably be the solution for my SACD collection, but it's not going to happen real soon.
Thanks. That is good advice. I know DVD-A are a bit inconsistent, as the authoring can vary widely.

Do you know if this Pentangle DVD-A allows hi-res PCM output on the S/PDIF jack? I know some other Silverline DVD-As I have do...they had sloppy/inconsistent authoring IME.
I believe it does. Right now I have my Oppo player hooked up to my HT Receiver via TOSlink and I am gettng PCM and Dolby Surround off of that disc. Coincidentally, I just bought an extra Coax cable, and will try that.
I agree, the authoring is sub par.
There are many products out there which follow the rules lower the quality of the digital output. If you're getting a signal via optical, check to see what sample rate and, if possible, what bit depth is being output. Digital output may be allowed, but it's possible that you may only get 16/48 instead of 24/96.
Interesting. I use a Transparent Toslink cable for my Squeezebox/CIA DAC set up, and I do so because in direct comparison I preferred it to coax. Much purer tones and bigger soundstage.

I think there was a version of PowerDVD or one of the popular packages that was hacked. Then a new version was released that plugged the "hole".
Some time spent on some internet searches will undoubtedly yield some fruit. It's your music. You should be able to play it from your hard drive if you want to.
I agree. Obviously high resolution files can be converted to FLAC as they are available for download, But after hours of searching forums and the like I sensed alot of frustration about ripping files directly from discs.
