IMO you're lucky to get them. There are very few DVD-A/SACD/DualDisc releases that interest me, but these ones do and somehow I missed them. At least I have the original LPs, and the CDs too for the car (the Alpine in my car doesn't like DualDisc). Would have liked the DDs for home use.

What do you think of the bass on these? I'm presuming the CD layer is the same as what I have, or maybe it's not?? Mine are the 2006 remasters. How about on the DVD side?Though the CDs sound pretty good overall, the CD bass compared to the LPs is noticeably deficient, and IMO destroys the "drive" that made a lot of this music compelling to some. A very different feel, and though the noise sounds "sweeter" on the CDs, and the vocals more clear, I can't help but feel the sound has been "gutted". I think it sounds this way because both the high and low ends have been largely filtered out.
Edit: I was listening with Maggies, and the "wall of sound" is far more immersive with the CD than the vinyl...so another point for the CD mix I guess. And I just realised something: due to laziness, I was listening with a DAC that IMO is lame in the lowest bass (presuming there is any here). I know I can do much better, but was inconvenient when comparing with the vinyl due to system arrangement, so I may be offbase with the bass comparison thing.

These are the 2006 remasters.
What makes them special compared to a lot of remastered titles is that for this series, Rhino went back to the original analogue master tapes - previous reissues of these albums had been cobbled together from all manner of sources, but these were the first time since the original vinyl releases where the original 1985 (for "Psychocandy", anyway)source material was used.
On the DualDiscs, you get the "red book that isn't red book" on the CD side, and glorious 24/96 stereo on the DVDA, as well as the video clips for the singles released off each album.
The sole thing that is missing IMHO is that the various acoustic versions of tracks like "You Trip Me Up" & "Never Understand" & "Taste Of Cindy" etc that cropped up on the 7" Vinyl deluxe editions could have been included instead of videos.
What a shame they went out of print so quickly.....these are 5 classic albums, and my favoutites right now are "Psychocandy" & "Darklands".
Glorious!
Getting control of a catalog, and allowing for no one else to play.
Pyscho Candy was recorded on the sly. They got signed on the basis of those acoustic demo tracks. They got a big advance from the label and immediately flew off to Japan and spent all of the money on these distortion boxes made by a fellow opium addict who immediately built them distortion boxes and filled them up with Opium and raw fish.
Returning to England, they recorded PsychoCandy and immediately drew the intense ire of the label.
With no money left, the label decided to release it instead of deep-sixing it.
It became a huge hit for them.
The worst thing in 1954 was the bikini; see the girl on the TV dressed in a bikini; she wouldn't think so, but she's dressed for the H-Bomb!
the evil Rhino blocking Genesis SACD sales in North America. OK, I don't like that. But generally, Rhino is almost like the "Good Housekeeping" seal of approval for me: chances are much higher that I will like their releases compared to others. They sure aren't perfect, but thank God for them anyway (their CDs at least).
I think somebody in this thread inferred the "non-CD" side of a DualDisc is DVD-A. Just to clarify for them, it isn't, it's DVD.
Although the Genesis SACDs vs Rhino mediocrity has my panties in a bunch; I have to admit that they have brought out a lot of cool shite that would've never gotten out there otherwise. Although the Joy Division redos are not that much better recordings in redbook, the packaging and extras are cool.

mine are 2006 but they dont say remasters.the cd side wont play.I use a 7.1 & there is no bass coming out of the subwoffer.I have all floor standers there plenty of bass coming out of those speakers.Neil recomeded these he knows more about how they were made.Im playing psyco candy again.I wish the sub worked it would make these even better.but the sound does have some bass.

I'm pretty sure the CD DualDisc side, if you could hear it, would be the same as what I have. It's not nearly as much of a driving aural assault (in a good way LOL) as the LP. I do have a sub to reinforce the Maggies, but there has to be something there to start with. The bass is very recessed in the mix, and very smoothed off IMO.
I was wondering if I could get more bass if I wanted it.I looked into the manual.found another way in the tone controls.Ive never messed with them.the bass control adjusts the sub.It goes from 0 to 12.I had the sub thundering with bass.to much so I dicided to leave it at +2.thanks for the post,If I want more bass I know were to look

there is bass in the subwoofer now.I had it set to neo6 sub didnt work changed it to pro logic 2 and it works. I will look in my manual to see witch setting make the sub work better. If you want lots of bass on this music the sub needs to be turned up all the way.all I did was turn it all the way up in the rec not the sub.any way hope that helps.

With Neo6 (being the DTS fake surround algo) did you have it set to Cinema or Music? On my reciever the first time I press the Neo6 button it is in Cinema mode, the second press gets it to Music.
DPLII also has many different modes of operation. Try cycling through the options on your reciever. Also, DPLII does not encode .1 channel information, so that .1 subwoofer sound is actually being diverted from the main channels - not a great idea for my preferred tastes, but it may sound just how you like it (which is all that really matters, I guess).
hi Neil glad to see your back.yes it was on the dts neo6.tried prologic2 music it was working.but not very loud.the tone control bass kicks the sub in.the poster was wondering if it was possible to get more bass it is but settings need to be changed.
I was wondering why the sub would only work on 5.1 discs.I dont like much bass but its strange that the tone control can give the sub some volume on regular discs.

I guess I could turn up the sub, but it's set at the "right" level to integrate as seamlessly as possible with the Maggies the way they're set up.
Don't tell anybody, but I have a parametric EQ and a dbx (to "uncompress") in my preamp tape loop...I took them out of storage a few years ago because so many current CD mixes/recordings seem to need them... So I can fix 2-ch stuff a bit when it gets really annoying.
