From Robert Fripp's online diary (Monday 26th January, My own edits for concision)-
"Steven (Wilson) had just done lunch... We move to this afternoon’s piece of work: Larks’ Tongues In Aspic – The Overwhelming & Surrounding Experience.
An exhausting afternoon for me, returning to this recorded once more. As Steven commented on my dribbling departure, it is intense.
The album is a classic, although it took those young players another few months before the music had been internalized through active service in the front line; and so was properly ready for recording. As a defining album, the choices in 5.1 (or whatever other format is being considered) have to be true, honouring both the originating intentions & the current form & technoscape. This requires re-entering the creative space where the music came from; and returning through the emotional wringer.
I left with headache, dribbling pitifully, a superb job well done. Steven has been a hero, once again; another labour of love."
I find it interesting that Fripp states "or whatever other format is being considered". Hmm... Not dead, I hope, but at the moment... Wait, what IS that smell???
Follow Ups:
24/96 version would be among the releases. I noted how it would be virtual suicide to put the master files up for download as it would leave him with nothing himself and the selling of bootlegged high res discs on ebay would be certain to be beginning soon thereafter. I was a bit irked to think only the 5.1 would be being released leaving me in the veritable High Rez lurch in my Two Channel world.
Interestingly I didn't read that parenthetical remark about whatever other format in the diary when I first read it. Maybe I just overlooked it or maybe he read my post and edited the entry..
Making the KC consumer happy might pay dividends.
Oh Yea! I'm from Memphis originally, now in Texas. I love my Sony 5.1.
