Commercial DVD-A discs have slowed to almost nothing, but there is a little life. All of the King Crimson discs will be coming out this year on DVD-A. DVD-A lives as the only viable hi-rez format for downloading. If you count 24/48 and 24/96 live recordings that get disseminated through "various" means DVD-A is very much alive. the whole problem with DVD-A on video discs is that it can be copied and shared easily. Make no mistake about it, DVD-A and SACD were created not for better quality sound, but as an attempt to prevent file sharing. Well, guess what, it didn't work!
If the record companies had just started to release remasters of albums in stereo at 24/96 at a reasonable price people, or at least I , would have snarfed them up.
I think they got what they deserved.
I also think that Bu-ray is going NOWHERE and is not even close to being embraced as a music format. I get my hi-def movies from Direct TV and soon enough they will download from the internet. Bye Bye blu-ray, you won the format battle but lost the war.
Follow Ups:
I went to Academy Records to sell a bunch of my duplicated and discards. They took lots of CDs and SACDs but categorically rejected all DVD-As because "that format is dead." Had to give them away.

I do like the Neil Young's though.
Thanks for the link,Teresa, I will check out that Oregon album. I get most of my hi rez recordings either from Archive.org or torrents that get shared.
Not to worry about the 2 channel King Crimson, I am pretty sure it will be there. The releases are slated for DVD-A, it is not so easy to extract those files, that is the difference between DVD-A and DVD-V. First are supposed to be out in March I believe.
I tried several Reference Recordings and they sound superb.
Give me high resolution or remain silent,
Teresa
I have all the RR HRx releases and they proclaimed there that everything was originally recorded at 24/176.4 digitally! Are they "downsampling" for the HD Tracks release to 24/96?
Not to knock RR, because I LOVE their stuff---BUT----I have already caught them in one "lie" as they state on my HRx release of "Exotic Dances of the Opera" that (according to the cover) it is a pure digital 24/176.4 release! However, I received a defective copy of the HRx release and they blamed the "master tape transfer to 24/176.4" as the culprit! When I pressed the issue they admitted that they took an ANALOG MASTER of "Exotic Dances" and copied it to 24/176.4 digital!
All that said, we need to be careful out there with these manufacturers claiming one thing and seliing us something else! Like some of these 16/44.1 original master digital recordings showing up on HD tracks magically now as "24/96 hi-rez".
BUYER BEWARE!

Joel

This is just plain wrong.
Blu-ray movie disk sales are doing quite well--even in the bad economy. In fact, their market penetration is at or just above the same level that was attained by regular DVD in the same time span. There is always going to be a large market for physical product.
From Robert Fripp's online diary (Monday 26th January, My own edits for concision)-
"Steven (Wilson) had just done lunch... We move to this afternoon’s piece of work: Larks’ Tongues In Aspic – The Overwhelming & Surrounding Experience.
An exhausting afternoon for me, returning to this recorded once more. As Steven commented on my dribbling departure, it is intense.
The album is a classic, although it took those young players another few months before the music had been internalized through active service in the front line; and so was properly ready for recording. As a defining album, the choices in 5.1 (or whatever other format is being considered) have to be true, honouring both the originating intentions & the current form & technoscape. This requires re-entering the creative space where the music came from; and returning through the emotional wringer.
I left with headache, dribbling pitifully, a superb job well done. Steven has been a hero, once again; another labour of love."
I find it interesting that Fripp states "or whatever other format is being considered". Hmm... Not dead, I hope, but at the moment... Wait, what IS that smell???
24/96 version would be among the releases. I noted how it would be virtual suicide to put the master files up for download as it would leave him with nothing himself and the selling of bootlegged high res discs on ebay would be certain to be beginning soon thereafter. I was a bit irked to think only the 5.1 would be being released leaving me in the veritable High Rez lurch in my Two Channel world.
Interestingly I didn't read that parenthetical remark about whatever other format in the diary when I first read it. Maybe I just overlooked it or maybe he read my post and edited the entry..
Making the KC consumer happy might pay dividends.
Oh Yea! I'm from Memphis originally, now in Texas. I love my Sony 5.1.
