" use linears in their top end products, just not their "entry level" ones."Of course because linear power supplies are always better than switch mode. Yeah right ;-)

Ok, maybe not always but...I'm going out on a limb and saying that linear power supplies CAN be made better than a switch mode.
First they came for the dumb-asses
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a dumb-ass

and countless others why they make that choice. Just observing!
" and countless others why they make that choice. Just observing!"It's self perpetuating based on many old guard companies still claiming that linear power supplies are best and audiophile consumers parroting these old myths.
The fact is, linear power supplies are one of the simplest things to make so even manufacturers with limited (or old school) technical capabilities can easily design good linear power supplies. A good switch mode power supply takes a bit more talent to get it right.

Observing reality is not *parroting* anything. You create and burn your own straw men.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but you, your bud C-T (and I) all use linear power supplies with our endpoints. What 7V SMPS would you suggest is equivalent quality to the HDPlex 200 used in main system? Or, 5V SMPS to replace the Chi-Fi linear feeding the RPis in garage?
Seems you've already had bad experience with iFi. I've had bad experience using ten buck units usually supplied and Apple iPad chargers. I'm all ears!
"Observing reality is not *parroting* anything."
Perpetuating an ancient 'reality' that someone taught you decades ago is. Sure you can observe that many high-end audio manufacturers use linear power supplies but that does not mean they are 'better' than well designed modern switching supplies. I'm not talking about the cheap wall warts that power most portable electronics. And I'm not saying that all SMPS are better. I'm suggesting that audiophiles open their eyes and ears and get beyond the old marketing myths from 40 years ago that high-end manufacturers still push today - and what old audiophiles still 'parrot' today. Just because you observe many audio manufacturers using LPS doesn't make them better.
Answer me this. What characteristics of linear power supplies make them better than a well designed modern SMPS?
The only LPS that happens to be in my system today is in the preamp.
observing fact is just that - an observation of reality. Do you have difficulty accepting reality? What characteristics of linear power supplies make them better than a well designed modern SMPS?
What's a "well designed modern SMPS"? Maybe I've yet to encounter one. Apparently, the Apple iPad block fails those criteria. The ones I have create a false brightness that obscures musical detail.
So which SMPS do you currently use with the RPi? Couldn't find a description in your gear list. Is that available in 7V?

of your RPi switcher even to mention it. Or answer other questions you ignored.

I've noticed a recurring pattern over the years in many different areas -- not just audio. That is, once a person learns a "fact" early in their life, career or hobby, it tends to remain immutable in their head regardless of what progress or changes the ensuing years bring.
Linear power supplies being better than switching is but one example -- very true when switching supplies were first available, but much less so these days.
I see the same in my industry (commercial insurance) where, as just one example, it is quite common to see commercial leases require specific insurance endorsements that haven't been available as a separate item for 35 or 40 years. The lawyer that wrote the lease learned something decades ago and has never bothered to update their knowledge.
Lots of other examples out there in any other field one can think of.
