Hi guys,
I need an alternative to my dad's old Marantz 2270 so I can push my ProAc Studio 150 speakers.
I am an experimental electronic music producer and have a small studio with analog and digital gear outputting to powered Genelec and Yamaha speakers, which is fine for listening to any type of music through them as I have loads of compression/parametric EQ/various filter plugins - as saved presets to listen to music just the way I personally like it - so I can "work" the sound into more analogue-ish and warm as I see fit.
Still, I need to play my music through a proper hi-fi system and I love my ProAc 150's.
Please note:
1. I only play digital files, flac and wav, mp3s. No turntable, no cds or any other player.
2. All my music is in a NAS. I play my music with Plex on a Mac Mini M1 server. Also Roon.
3. In the living room where I have my ProAc 150's and Marantz, I have a smart tv so I have Plex open all day long for music and movies.
4. I can play music in my living room with my iphone because I have an old Apple Airport Express attached to my wifi network so I use the Plexamp, Spotify, Roon... apps.
5. I listen mainly to contemporary music, ambient - electroacoustic - electronica - noise - post-rock - sludge - black metal - death metal. No jazz, no old progressive rock, no "vocals" music.
6. I need a slim amplifier in the region €750-1250. Preferably black color and with no screen (but if it has one, not a problem).
7. Was looking at the Rega Elex Mk4? Suitable alternatives?
many thanks for your feedback!
best
Jorge

I would look into Buckeye Amps either NCx500 or a Purifi depending on power. Both right at $1000.
I am in Portugal EU... not easy to get more "special" American makes... but thanks!
Check out Apollon Audio located in Slovenia.
I know of Apollon, a little high on the price for me right now, I am looking in the 1000-1500 region. many thanks
I don't have ProAc Studio 150 speakers but Spendor S8e speakers that are also a nominal 8 ohm impedance load. I am using these speakers in my family room using a MacBook Air with M2 that outputs to a USB DAC that provides an input to a Fosi ZA3 amplifier. The sound quality (imaging, detail, dynamics) is outstanding, especially considering the cost of the amplifier. I have used various external DACs with the Air (Topping, Oppo, Fosi) to stream Qubuz and ripped digital files. I would recommend this low-cost amplifier option. For comparison I have previously used the following amplifiers with these speakers and do not make this recommendation lightly-the Fosi is satisfying at an incredible budget level:
Cary 300 SEI
Rogue Chronus Magnum Integrated
YBA Integrated DT Alpha
Primare i30.

I bought the Fosi ZA3 just to check if I would be as amazed as you are and I have to say it is an awesome amp for the price. I am still playing several styles of music but already came to 2 conclusions... there's just not enough power, I have the 48V PSU and really need to turn the dial up to 3/4 to say its loud enough in rock and metal music but not nearly enough for ambient and acoustic... and rock and metal dont sound great, bass is a little busy and muffled even though ambient and acoustic is actually fine.
I will continue my quest with buying some "classic" Amps/integrated amps such as Audiolab, Rega, Nad etc and do AB comparisons. Will be posting back soon.
Thanks very much... who would say the Fosi is awesome when compared with such high regarded amps! At this price I will order one for AB comparisons with a Rega Elex Mk4 I ordered few days ago, it will be fun..
I'm using a Rotel A11MKII with a pair of Nola Boxer speakers. I thought it was going to be a temporary, fairly inexpensive solution until I upgraded the amp but it sounds so good I'm content for now.
thanks! reading good reviews about it!
a friend recommended the ATOLL IN 50 or 100, any experience with these amps?
You want neutral. How large is the room? How close are you to the speakers? Did you mean a power amp or integrated? What is the D/A from system to amp? Look on Craigslist if you have that where you live. Right now where I live there is a killer Rotel 200wpc. $200, NAD, A killer Adcom pre, cd, amp $350 and dropping because Adcom is your grandmother's Buick of mid-fi, a home brew Marantz power amp made from AliEx knockoff modules with 2 built in oscilloscopes to set bias and offset 125wpc $200. I have an Adcom gfa5400 $200, a Proceed amp 2 $290 plus gas, Music Hall 15.3 $200, all very neutral sounding. Also an AliEx Krell/Pass Labs knockoff with one hour on it $100, 20wpc of glorious class A. If you need something cheap and powerful the big Yamaha AV receivers with the amber display sound phenomenal $50 at Goodwill. As much as receivers are gushed over here and AK, separates even in the low end of hifi are a step up. PS when buying on CL, never buy unless you can hear it for yourself. A seller may want meet at a neutral spot, ask the buy to put a vid of it playing out of both channels on YT or pass on it. The above especially goes for Fleabay, you WILL get burned and they will back the seller not you. Back in the day I had Studio Ones and a BK EX442.
She can't tell the difference between the loo and an airlock. We had to back and get her. Twice

thank you for your input and consideration. I am in Portugal, we have OLX, no craiglist, no ebay, people in Portugal inflate prices of used electronics as if they were new and vintage is out of hand, its ridiculous. I am veering towards some UK brands, recent post 20000 amps, Rega, Cambridge Audio, Roksan, NAD, Audiolab, and then maybe Hegel, Rotel...
When you get the list narrowed down do a search for "Your Amp" problems and see what is reliable. I used to live in southeast Massachusetts USA, where there are more Azorians than in the Azores. I so miss massa bread and linguica and fried peppers sandwiches.

thanks matey! linguiça, azores cheese, soft warm bread, peppers and a drizzle of olive oil... not much like it!
I don't have Studio 150s. However I have response twos. I used to drive them with a Plinius 9200. Great match.
This might be a good match.

YES! have it in my list, what about the NAD C 3050?
Sorry no experience with the C3050. NAD's best class D amps use Purifi modules. It doesn't look like the C3050 is a Purify model.
