It's probably not the regulator per say that is doing the good work here but the much larger filter cap and transformer feeding it.

I do wish you luck on the very intersting endeavor you have chosen. However, based on my results of adding the KAB supply I wouldn't be able to justify going to the trouble of designing a new controller myself. The improvement from the supply is that good. In my mind it proves how good the controller must have already been.

Are the technics motors 3 phase brushless DC? You might look into chips like the Fairchild ML4425. I have used this part in a product at work and the speed loop bandwidth can be set well outside the audible range. It was really easy to tune in and I think could work very well as long as you have some CPU or something evaluating position/speed and correcting via the speed command input. Also it uses back EMF detectors to sense position for it's internal control loop so no sensors are needed.
