Except that when actually playing a record ... the stylus rests in a groove.
So your 'test' ... doesn't hold, IMO. Being 'in the groove' suggests to me that spinning at 45rpm may well increase friction - and therefore need more anti-skate. The fact that the OP heard a problem in his R channel suggests that increased anti-skate is necessary for 45s.
