One more trick that you may want to try first. There's usually a resistor in series with the tweeter on the + leg. If you increase the value of this resistor you will dampen down the tweeter level a bit, making the speaker sound a bit less "thin". Obvoiusly reducing the resistor value makes a speaker go the other way.
I would recommend Solen or Axon resistors (they are actually the same) for any tweeter, unless you want to go hog wild on very expensive parts.
As for replacing crossover caps, stick with the same values as before, but better quality caps are usually larger in size, so you may need a bigger breadboard. I like the Sonicaps for value, quality, transparency and cost. You may also want to bypass any tweeter cap with a .1uF Sonicap II (no need to do this for bass caps).
