I actually had the opposite experience... after using passive preamps for a number of years I broke down and bought a tubed pre, and to my ears with my gear it's no contest in favor of the active tubed pre. But I think the key to using an active pre is that it has to be of very, very good quality, or else it's going to veil and muddy up the sound, and then you're probably better off with a passive.
