Dave Pogue,I'm sure the choice of 6550 will be quite dependent on the amplifer and associated gear. I quite liked the Philips ECG also- the only ECG tube I didn't feel like tossing on the rubbish bin- but the GE I felt was bringing out a very pleasant transparent, detailed bass in the Audio Research D115- not over-emphasised. With the SP10 preamplifier, I didn't feel the top end was grainy or harsh.
But, now that current ptoduction 6550's are so much better, I'm open on the subject and when I next retube the D115, I may well have ago with the SEDs or possibly the TungSol reissue which I haven't still heard.
Someday, too I'd like to spend more time with 845's for that matter. SET is intriguing and I recently bought some tubes from a fellow in Germany who runs an ARC LS25 into Antique Sound Lab 1006 -845-based monoblocks ( Synergistic Research speakers). The combination is so quirky, I 'd like to hear it! The tubes in the ASL's btw, are Super TNT 845M "The Handpicked Edition" from China.
By the way, 845's appear to have ceramic parts- a kind of rectangular bar structure in a cross form at the top. Do you happen to know what the ceramic used is made from- aluminum silicate possibly?
Cheers,
Bambi B
