Bambi,The consensus of the board here is the 6SN7 would be pretty easy to work with and sound good too. The shape of the ones I have now isn't exotic, but they are better looking than the standard miniature 9 pin variety.
The SET preamp idea is also intriguing. That is where it all started but I am guessing it is hard to keep the noise down for small signals in the SET design.
I am gong to have to mull it over.
