Re: If the benchmark is the Mullard M8137 old logo, what current production ......

The initial batch of Groove Tube 12AX7M "reissue" short plate ECC83s was very encouraging. A good dose of the midrange accent at a "rational" price was present. SADLY, the 12AX7Ms entering the marketplace since the 1st batch have been GUANO. Scan the archives for additional info.

2 current production 'X7s can be recommended. Both are made at the Saratov, Russia plant. The Sovtek 12AX7LPS is clean and quiet. For "flavor", the "reissue" TungSol variant is worth a tumble.

BTW, if you are LUCKY enough to have equipment that uses "12" V. on the 'X7 heaters, a low cost NOS option is available. The triodes in a 7058 are the same as the triodes in a 'X7. However, the 7058 pins out like the 6922 (internal shield to pin 9). So, it can't be used with "6" V. on the heater. 7058s made by GE can be bought for less than $10/tube. 7058s built by RCA cost more.
