A true 6CA7 is really a beam tetrode, while an EL34 is a pentode. The KT77 is also a tetrode. The beam tetrode was invented as a workaround to the Philips patent on the pentode.I won't go into the sonic differences between the two - I prefer pentodes - but mileage may vary based on your equipment, listening tastes, etc.
