RCA cleartop 12AU7: country of origin

mattybumpkin,

I may well be incorrect . It's certainly possible the RCA 12AU7 "cleartop" was also made in Mexico, though as mentioned I thought these all came from the US. But, the reference to the different cut-outs in the micas dependiong on country of origin is very specific. I looked into the archives here on this subject and could only see a reference by "Aldovan" who insists the RCA cleartop was not made by RCA, Brazil.-I assume your quote is in reference to the 12AU7 and not the RCA 6FQ7 which was made as either a regular top getter or as a sidegetter tube- and the cleartop 6FQ7 was made in Mexico also.

A bit of a mystery. This means that if I were buying RCA cleartops, I would certainly verify the country of origin first.

I have 7- RCA cleartop 12AU7s and the best are 2 pair of Textronix matched ones and these four tubes vary by no more than about 3% between all 8 sections! Another nice cleartop example is a NOS Hewlett-Packard labelled one that came in a thick cardboard tube.

Cheers,

Bambi B
