The higher transconductance of the 5814 may make a difference - I don't know. The 5814 is listed for 1/3 the price of a 12AU7 at Antique Electronic Supply, even less than Chinese 12AU7s. Supply and demand... guess they're not THAT well known.Since you want AFFORDABLE, maybe you shouldn't think about 7316s... if heater power is sufficient, 12BH7 and ECC99 are possibilities, but I'd check with Cary (or just measure voltages...).
