...get a modded Squeezebox2 or an modded (or unmodded) Olive Musica.
Dediciated cd players will be a thing of the past soon. I had an Ah! Tjoeb cd player that I thought was really good until I got a modded Olive Musica from Red Wine Audio. Superb sound, way bettered the Tjoeb in sound via its modded analogue outs, and it is outstanding as a transport if you want to use the digital outs to a DAC. Basically its a hard drive that you import your music into, then you don't have to mess with cd cases anymore. The downsides are that some of the operation is a bit clumsy (see the recent 6moons review). They are supposedly working on a 'Palm Pilot' type of remote, which would be great, because the visual display is difficult to to read across the room.
I have two audiophile friends in town who have Squeezeboxes, and they are very happy with them. You use your computer as digital source, and can wirelessly transmit to the Squeezebox, which has a very cool and visible display. Sound is also superb.
The great advantages of these units over a cd player are that you no longer have to handle the cds and you can CREATE any kind of Playlists any which way, such as playlist of favorites or a certain kind of genre (jazz, reggae, etc.,) AND you can have it pick random tracks. The Olive somehow creates a musical flow, I think by matching genres and gracefully switching to others, which I find really cool. I can't tell you just this feature makes listening to your music easy and really FUN...you don't know what song is coming next, so familiar and unfamiliar music sounds fresh and interesting outside of the usual cd format. Once you've tried it, you'll be convinced!
