I am in a similar situtaion as you...and have come across the following1. Cambridge Audio 640C version 2...retail is about $530.00 but I always see them on Audiogon for about $399.00...great review in the current Hi-Fi+.
2. Music Hall CD25.2...about $599.00 and they were raving about it last year in the mags.
3. Njoe Tjoeb 4000...with tube output stage...$749.00 at upscale audio.
4. Rega Planet 2000...$995.
I am to wrapped up with other crap right now to truly start making a choice...but those seem to be the contenders in the sub $1000 class.
