I agree with you completely on the Sylvania square getter triplemica black plates as having the best that a 5751 has to offer, except bass it's bass is nevertheless still prodigious but less obvious than some others because it is somewhat more taught, less prone to losing control. Compared to a GE which is simply thunderous at times overwhelming this tubes refiement. The bass is by no means a weak attribute. I also agree the JHS and the non consumer variants although supposedly the same as the consumer black plate gold brand, are IMHO quite different. The sound is superior in these tubes because they are supremely quiet in my applications, are remarkable detailed, have imaging capability the would turn many a tube jealous with envy and on and on.
I also agree that the other 5751s are nothing to readily dismiss with a very few exceptions. The Raytheon and RCA are very puchy and well defined. I can't comment on the Command, or Siemens which I just never collected or got around to hearing.
The Sylvania Grey plate's sound early and late- I have many of both have unfortunately been for me a matter ofjust getting good tubes. The best tubes tested well are were not microphonic, those were fabulous. The others were frying their shipping boxes before I even knew the extent that people will go to to make a buck. Let that be warning the market is rife with crap. I had to just take a complete loss on, because I won't flip a tube I know isn't good. If I do ever sell a lousy tube, full disclosure would make it too much of a pain to ship at the prices they would fetch.
The Greyplates, however seemed a tad less refined overall. However I was quite enamored of a late pair that remained in my amp for quite some time when the rolling bug hit, a strong pair of GB but double micas, the type with the wide yellow inking.
The Ge is a special tube in both black and grey, I have a strong preference for the refinement of the TMBP. While the bass output is considerable for both it is sometimes simply over the top with the greys I have had. For you bass maniacs it is a great choice. In most cases it shares the attributes of the best of what a 5751 can yield. I am deeply convinced 5751s make more out of the music. the 5751 suits my taste more than the vast majority of 12AX7s. The AX7s don't have nearly as much refinement or temprement, yes they are more powerful and even clean defined ones strike me as forceful in the tone and timbre. They are simply not as pleasant sure they are bigger sounding but it can feel a bit like comparing a truck with a finely engineered car. Even tonal classics like Blackburn Mullards which have their moments with regards to adding some of that classic sweetness can also just sound muddled by comparison.
The only issue is gain -it's true it may not be enough to give your phono stage the impact needed without stretching the rest of your circuit. In that case you may need the massive torque. My preamp which is more than adequate and in fact difficult to contain, doesn't seem to suffer. However I have encountered situations where 5751s are not adequate subs no matter the quality. The reasons are probably obvious to the EEs amongst us comparing other electrical parameters.
There are some 5751s that aren't so great but I'll stay positive here. I only wish my head wasn't burried in the 12AX7 sand while you were snarfing up the best NOS tubes for low prices.
