Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

A bit simplistic but there's opportunity....

if you can find enough folks to purchase your transformers.

The key to all the old tube amps that folks tend to value more is the output transformers. I wouldn't necessarily single out the Citation IIs with such a statement, either. That said, the Citation IIs and V's were well-built - over built actually. I'd suggest that there's more to them than just the transformers, however. Their multiple feedback loops are well-engineered, IMHO, as well as the wide bandwidth they can achieve that's more than just the iron.

On the business side, I know there's one small shop in Wisconsin, I believe, that does all-custom work on power and output transformers. I believe he's even got the recipes for the old Mac transformers - just can't remember the company name. This indicates there's some work available for a transformer rewinder. If you want to investigate, I'd contact Audio Classics and see how many old Macs they've gotten over the years with bad transformers. I recall that they once told me that there hadn't been that many overall. That should help you get a handle on the business opportunity. I have no idea what the tooling would cost for such a venture, BTW.

Cheers,
