There are preamps that are based on the big DHT tubes - does it still sound excellent with large, reasonably priced DHT tubes?>Good question - I haven't tried. Reports are that the sound is a bit slow with a 300b, which is one that has been tried. Maybe 2a3 would be better? I've tried 10Y and 45 against 26, 30 and 31 and prefer the latter. Certainly 10Y can be used in line stages, but I don't know if that's current production. It would be GREAT if the Chinese brought out a reasonably priced small DHT. The problem is - as we've seen in this thread - that the demand isn't there in the first place because nobody knows about small DHTs. I'm sure a demand could be eventually created if enough production units used one, but here we come to problem number two with DHTs - they are a swine to heat with their hummy directly heated filaments. You need a whole extra supply just to take care of the filaments. Not for the faint hearted.

> Yes indeed - if this spread to small DHTs I'd be delighted. They won't make other tubes obsolete - they have no place in the stage gear market for starters - but certainly a few people would swear there's nothing better, as they do with 845, 300b and 2a3 amps. So far I see no stirrings of such an idea. Most likely small DHTs will continue to be shrouded in myth for years to come. There's a thriving market on ebay, however, and prices have gone up. Put that down partly to the radio hams who need them for their vintage radios.
