Excellent or best?

There is no such thing as "the best tube preamp". All of the above mentioned units (plus many others) are capable of excellent performance>>

But the poster didn't ask for 'excellent' he asked for the best, which to me means that you optimise everything, design, componants etc. Are you going to tell me that a 12AX7 in a line stage can under any circumstances sound as good as a DHT given that both circuits are optimised?

If you allow for balances/SE and impedence matching, why is the system so important to a line stage? An amp, maybe, but a line stage?

(and of course, all proper amorphous cores are hand smelted under the full moon at midnight "as any fule kno")
