I've rebuilt a couple receivers, a Fisher 400 and a Scott 340B. I replaced all signal caps with 716p Orange Drops and part of the power suplies. Afterwards neither unit lost it's characteristic sound but the sound was "sharpened up" on both and bass improved with the added capacitence. Both receivers actually worked very well stock. Also, I found that my 340B required good front end tubes. Russian 12ax7's sounded grainy at higher volumes. NOS sounded good and the new groove tube 12ax7's sound good. My fisher 400 doesn't seem as finicky with front end tubes. I have heard of modern high end caps not matching very well with vintage gear. A modern high end tube system also will not sound like a Fisher 400.
