After rebuilding a tube set with new caps (actually a completely refurbished power supply in this case), is it common that the unit sounds nothing like what it used to?I have a Fisher 400 that was refurbished a couple months ago. Before restoration it had some issues (snap/crackle/pop and occasional loss of volume coupled with distortion in one channel), but when it was stable the sound was warm, rich and very musical. Could listen all day with interest if you had the time.
After the rebuild it will run all day without breaking a sweat, but in terms of performance it sounds dry and clinical. More highs and less midrange. Still sounds better than anything you'll find at a big box store, but it's a "take it or leave it" situation now. It's just not as "musical" as it was before the overhaul.
Will this change as the new components break-in? I hate to sound like a "whiner", but after spending all of that money (cost of receiver, cost of rebuild + shipping and return shipping) I am a little bummed and thinking about starting over.
