I guess my point was that NO 12AU7 is working at its best with only 1.3mA of current running thru it, so you would be better off with a smaller value cathode resistor which will increase the current thru the 12AU7. Then in theory any and all 12AU7s you try will tend to sound better. But once you've done that the 12AX7 is probably no longer useable, because it will tend to be running in excess of the max plate dissipation for a 12AX7 (depending upon the plate voltage in your amplifier circuit, about which I know nothing). You will probably prefer the sound you get with a properly set up 12AU7 as driver than what you are getting now with either of the two tube types.
