"Will I encounter this again......"

ffrr is correct. Having a tube short out is not rare (thankfully it is not usual either). I have had it happen 3 times over the past 10 years and each time I had to have a bia resistor replaced. Cost about $100 to $125 each time. However the resistor is really cheap and if you can learn how to do it its an easy job to replace the resistor so long as it didn't burn the trace on the board.

Present KT90's do not have a good reputation for quality. Personally I would use SED 6550C's if you want to avoid (as much as possible) future failures. They have a reputation for being rugged. I've never had one fail.
