Hello Simond,
I do not think it is possible to do what you want to do with your
headphones.I have owned only one ARC amp,which was a D-90B.This amp,
along with the D-70,has the common or "zero" speaker floating above
ground with dc voltage on it.Grounding it or tying it to the other
channels common terminal would surely mess up the output tube bias.
The 4 ohm terminal is actually the one that is connected to chassis
ground and B-.I think in your case you will be better off getting
a dedicated headphone amp and forget about trying to use your D-70
to drive them.If you are a tube DIY'er or if you are a beginner and
want to dip your toe into the wonderful world of tube DIY'ing,you
could build your own tube headphone amp.It is one of the easiest
DIY projects to build.And you can find many schematics on the
internet.
