Valvo Hamburg ECC83

Alexander H,

I don't know the Jadis gear, and there are many Valvo Hamburg ECC83 models, but I am currently using a pair of 1963 Hamburg Valvo ECC83 that has a ring getter at a 45 degree angle. These are the first gain pair in my all valve microphone preamplifier (6-ECC83, 2-ECC81). I am also enjoying nice Valvo Hamburg gold pin 6201/E81CC for the ECC81s. To get different effects, I sometimes switch between the Valvo ECC83 and old triple mica Sylvania 5751 in this preamplifier. I have later dimpled disc getter Valvo ECC83 and these are not a serious decline in sound either.

If that's what you have in mind, the Valvo ECC83 are quite fine. I have two co-favourites among ECC83, the Amperex Bugle Boy and the Siemens E83CC triple mica- the Amperex being the Dutch Philips near equivalent of the Hamburg is balanced, neutral, and progressive, smooth, and quiet, while the Siemens E83CC is a fast and punchy tube. I've really never met a Valvo I didn't like.

I'm perhaps the wrong person to comment on Telefunken as I only like them in vintage gear- I use them in my McIntosh and Fisher stuff, but I find them in modern, high resolution gear to be actually too transparent and weightlessly dynamic- a bit too light. Completely wrong in Audio Research. I think the Valvos would offer a noticeable additional substance- a bit more authority- in a modern amplifier.

Not to throw too much at once, but I have an idea the ECC83 for you would be the Mullard M8137- must be the early model- the most "elegant" sonding ECC83- and that one might really suit the suave Jadis.

Cheers,

Bambi B
