Hello-- It looks like the tubestore.com has lowered the price on the KT88-98 Shuguang to only $45/pair, so at $90/quad that's within $5 of your initial target. The KT88-98 is SO great, too. Penta still sells quads of the Shuguang KT88SC.... but they are only available under Pentas proprietary "Teslovak" name; ironic to call a Chinese tube by a name that is 100% evocative of both Tesla and Slovakia! Plus, they are about $160/quad and no better than the $90 quads from the tube store. I hope I was able to help you in some small way with your query; it is cool to see people starting to appreciate the Chinese KT88s. Now, if Shuguang, who owns Tianjen/fullmusic and makes that incredible 300B sold as the Tianjen and also the Shuguang 300B special ceramic base type for $399/quad could make a "select" version of the KT88 I think they could corner the market. They are already great, but just judging by their triodes like the 845 metal plate and Tianjin 300B, they are capable of making a KT88 comparable to the Gold Lion 1960s reference KT88. Now if they would only introduce their own KT77, all would be good.
