In Reply to: Where can you find Penta Shuguang KT88SC Quad for $85? posted by audiophile121 on April 22, 2006 at 18:28:07:
From my Google search, Nowhere, unfortunately. Penta had matched and burned-in Shuguangs but they are out of stock of quads on the solid plate KT88SC, and want too much for the singles and pairs they do have. www.superTNT.com has various Chinese/Shuguang KT88s; I think their economy model is about $80/quad...plus mega shipping from China. The only place to get Penta KT88SC tubes is the Penta website. The link is below. No one else sells Penta branded Shuguangs, but many vendors sell the Shuguang brand, which is identical to Penta. Try the tubestore.com; select the KT88-98 Shuguang for $49/pair. It isn't the solid plate "GEC copy" that you may be looking for, but it sounds just as good, only just a bit different, with more dynamics and soudstaging, better bass, and extended treble... but at the cost of a TINY amount of inner detail. Really, the KT88-98 IS the best version; I've tried all 4 Chinese KT88s available, in Dyna MKIIIs and an Audio Research D76. Penta claims they screen and burn in tubes (I think Gold Aero became Penta)The link is below. They are NOT $85/quad, they are nearly double that at $65/pair and more for a quad, which they currently do not have. The word is out on the Chinese KT88-- that sonically it stomps EVERYTHING out there, with many audiophiles finding them a TOTALLY acceptable replacement for the ridiculously priced Gold Lion Originals, or original TungSols. I think they sound like TungSol 6550s (which is a good thing-- I favor the TungSol over the Gold Lion/Genalex 1960s KT88)In any case, it's my opinion and everyone whom I respect also has the opinion that the Chinese KT88 is SO much better than the Russian stuff or the JJs.... the Chinese are really getting it right-- tubes that don't merely perform their most basic function, but amplify signal with actual fidelity and finesse. Good luck getting them-- you will love them.
