Tubes Asylum Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ |
|
Hi,I turned on my amps last night and the 5AR4 in one of the amps arced. I was still standing by the amp so I shut it down immediately and pulled the tube. I've been using Sovtecs and am happy with the life I've gotten out of them but, their heaters aren't very visible at night. There's just nothing like listening at night with the lights out or at least very dim so that the glow of the tubes beams forth. Needless to say this post is about romance and not sound. Anyway, I went straight to my tube stash and found only one 5AR4. It's quite a bit larger than the Sovtec and the heater is much more visible. Yep, it glows better. The paint/ink is all gone from the tube and I couldn't find any etching to help identify it, it's definately an older production tube. Are there any new production 5AR4s that glow better than the Sovtecs? Any reasonably priced old production tubes?
The only thing better than the warm glow of tubes is their reproduction of music.
